Turfgrass Outreach Specialist

The Department of Plant Pathology at the University of Wisconsin – Madison is seeking a highly motivated individual to join as a Turfgrass Outreach Specialist specializing in the development and dissemination of reduced-toxicity turfgrass management programs. The position will be under the supervision of Assistant Professor Paul
Degree and area of specialization:
M.S. preferred, B.S. required in Horticulture, Plant Pathology, or a related plant science field with an emphasis on applied plant sciences.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
2 years of relevant work experience, including use of statistical techniques and software, is preferred. Demonstrated proficiency in written and oral communication is required. Must be able to coordinate and collaborate on field experiments relevant to gaining necessary information for outreach duties. Must be independently motivated yet willing to work in collaboration with others.
This academic staff person will have responsibilities in two primary areas: serve as the primary contact for a reduced-toxicity pest management initiative in the Wisconsin turfgrass industry (golf courses, athletic fields, home lawns), and assist Koch lab staff and graduate students in general research and maintenance needs. This position has funding for 3 years, and continued employment beyond that date will depend on funding availability.
50% – Serve as the primary contact for a reduced-toxicity pest management initiative in the Wisconsin turfgrass industry. This will entail: maintaining contact with turfgrass managers throughout the state about the initiative, conducting statistical analysis on pesticide usage both pre- and post-initiative, conducting field-based research on methods for reducing current environmental impact of turfgrass management, developing reduced-toxicity recommendations based on field results, use multiple platforms (social media, website, print and oral communication) to disseminate information to the industry and the general public.
20% – Assist Koch lab staff and graduate students in general plot maintenance, study design and implementation, treatment application, data collection/analysis, and report preparation.
20% – Assist in laboratory research and upkeep as well as maintenance of studies in greenhouse and controlled environment chambers.
5% – Assist in development of turfgrass disease fact sheets and other extension publications related to turfgrass management.
5% – Assist in teaching of introductory laboratory course in turfgrass management.
-Must be able to drive state of Wisconsin vehicles
-Must be able to work outdoors and assist with field experiments
-Occasional overnight travel outside of Madison will be required
-Must be willing and able to obtain pesticide application certification in the state of Wisconsin
Salary Range: Anticipated between $36,000 – $44,000 based on experience and qualifications.
